🎨Year 5 Art Trip to
Birmingham City Centre🎨
Year 5 showed fantastic Tiverton Academy values and resilience today during a soggy, challenging sketching trip to Birmingham city centre! They explored the diverse architecture and monuments across Victoria and Centenary Square. Next up: using their research to design their very own buildings and monuments!
Over the past couple of weeks, we have designed a stuffed toy, created a template and started to cut out the fabric. Our next step is to learn how to do cross and blanket stitch! Watch this space...
After using a viewfinder to choose an interesting part of our observational sketches, we then enlarged it onto separate paper.
The next step was to roll out a thin layer of printing ink onto an acetate sheet (very satisfying - ASMR!) and then apply the paper to it. We then had to draw over the lines we had drawn - carefully, don't press too hard! - then we peeled the paper. Hey Presto! A mono-print!
One of Y5's favourite times of the day and week is our Reading Workshop. In this session, we get to work in a small group with our teachers, or if we are in independent groups, we can read our own choice of books, magazines (we have subscriptions to Match and National Geographic Kids!) or online books through Epic Reading. Other activities include cued spelling with our partners and Mathletics - reading for maths! It's a short, busy session but always filled with reading!
As we start our new art project, Year 5 spent a lesson sketching images of different examples of domestic architecture: houses and flats. They had to focus on the outer shapes (are they triangles, squares, rectangles or something more organics) and then the intricate details of the brickwork and roofing tiles. It was a challenge not to use a ruler for the straight lines.
Thank you so much to all the parents who were able to attend our parent orientation sessions this time round. Here is a copy of the slides we used.
We look forward to working with you all. It's going to be a great year!
