At Tiverton Academy, we believe that all children should have time after school to relax, be with their families and pursue their other interests and hobbies.
We also believe that it is important that children spend some time at home on activities which embed the learning they have done in class, give time to practise skills in a relaxed environment, and begin to foster independence and the idea that learning does not stop at the classroom door. Some of these activities, such as spelling homework, are provided by class teachers. As a school, we have also purchased subscriptions to learning platforms that are useful for home practise - you will find links to these below.
Reception
For our youngest learners, "homework" consists of sharing books, experiencing the world around them and practising their communication skills with a range of people. We believe that this will set them up for future success in their learning journey.
Year 1 - Year 6
Reading
We expect all our children to have read (either with an adult or independently) at least three times a week and for this to have been recorded in their Reading Record books. For our older children, they use the comment space to write a "mini-review" where they can add their response to what they have just read independently. This Reading Record book is checked weekly by class teachers.
In Year 6, as part of their preparation for SATs and the transition to Year 7 - where they are responsible for returning homework when asked - the children have a weekly comprehension to complete which they are asked to bring back into school the following week.
Reading - Apps and Sites
Spelling
Each week, children will have spelling sessions where they will learn a spelling pattern and be given a set of spelling words (the number of words given will vary by age and ability) which they will learn using the Look, Cover, Write, Check method. In KS2, they are also expected to use these new words in context by writing them in age-appropriate sentences. The children will have a weekly test on the words that have been learned so that areas for further support can be identified.
Spelling and Grammar - Apps and Sites
All children have a log in to this app. It contains information, activities and learning videos to support children in many aspects of the curriculum, but we particularly recommend the areas focused on SPaG.
This free website provides children with videos and activities on a range of topics inlcluding English.
Maths
We believe that the experience of working with numbers, shapes and measures in real-life contexts is invaluable for children's mathematical learning and would encourage all families to involve their children in as much of this as possible at home or in day to day activities.
In Year 2, children should begin to practise their times tables at home (2s, 5s, 10s). By the end of Year 4, all children should know their times tables up to x12 so at home practise of this would be very supportive.
In Year 6, as part of their preparation for SATs the children are given an area of arithmetic to practise each week in order to support their arithmetic results in school. The results of this practise will be evident in their arithmetic text the following week.
Maths - Apps and Sites
All children from Year 2 upwards have a log-in for this app which will enable them to practise their times table fluency and complete related challenges.
All children from Year 1 upwards have a log-in for this app. The activities are aligned with the learning that the children are doing in class and give them real-time feedback.
